Siddharth Bothra

I am a first-year graduate student in the Development, Regeneration and Stem Cell Biology program at the University of Chicago. Multicellular dynamics and morphogenesis fascinate me, and I am excited to explore these in a biological system rarely sought for such questions – bacteria! I want to understand what makes bacteria aggregate into biofilms of specific morphologies and what drives them to disperse out of it.

I did my undergraduate at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, where I worked with Prof. Ramray Bhat and Prof. Prosenjit Sen for my Bachelor’s thesis to understand how tissue-scale properties of ovarian cancer spheroids affect their mechanical integrity. I also spent a semester with the Huch Lab at MPI-CBG, Dresden, working on intercellular mechanics in mice liver organoids.

Beyond the lab, I love travelling and desserts in equal measures and am often accused of talking too much about trains and hot chocolates. I find biking, cooking and feverishly cleaning the entire house quite therapeutic.
